The toys that the Florida pioneer children amused themselves with were nothing like the toys found at the stores today. Almost all toys were homemade. Toys such as the “whizzer” were common. The “whizzer” was made from a button threaded on a string and was spun between the fingers of both hands. Other homemade fun was created from rolling hoops, sling shots, stilts or Tom Walkers, stick horses, wooden tops, and flying jennies. Children would also spend their time whittling whistles out of Willow tree branches and carving animals.
